A good side trip, only about one hour from the mine site, Hart Mt., offers numerous animal species, including pronghorn antelope, California big horn sheep, mule deer, and sage grouse. Spanning over 200,000 acres with elevations ranging from 4,500 to over 8,000 feet, the refuge offers breathtaking scenery, campgrounds, and a wonderful soothing hot spring. Rockhounding on the refuge can afford visitors jasper, opal, and copralites.
A scenic 2-hour drive leads you to the Juniper Ridge Opal Mine, where you can dig Juniper Ridge Fire Opal. This mine offers opal "eggs" as large as TWELVE POUNDS.
Just 2 1/2 hours by car, a side trip to the Rainbow Ridge Opal Mine (702-941-0270) in Virgin Valley, NV offers fee-digging for fire opal.

These are all areas of significant interest historically, geologically, and biologically. This area known as the Oregon Outback is one of the most beautiful, though least visited parts of the American West.
